Surprisingly, as I remember it being different back in the day, Volumetric Effects Quality (1%), Game Effects Quality (1%), Postprocessing Quality (3%), Particles Quality (1%), Water Quality (2%), and Motion Blur (2%) also fail to cause any major change in performance. If I turn off ShadowPlay, average framerates are well above 60 fps, but there are still occasional fps drops.įor modern GPUs with lots of memory (and relative to 2007's Crysis, 'lots' means 2GB or more VRAM, so everything qualifies), Texture Quality and Shadows Quality make no difference in performance, and Physics Quality also doesn't change performance-in fact, setting these to Low actually dropped performance slightly, suggesting Nvidia's drivers may have been tuned over the years for the Very High settings. I'm also looking at an early portion of the game, and some of the later levels can be a bit more demanding. However, I'm recording the video using ShadowPlay (GeForce Experience), which at 4k ends up dropping gaming performance by around 10 percent. Second, you'll see in the video that framerates still dip below 60 fps on occasion. First, don't use FRAPS with Crysis-it doesn't appear to like the game these days (in my experience, it caused major stuttering). So I overclocked the CPU to 4.8GHz and ran the GPU at around 2000MHz, with a small boost to the VRAM clock, and that did the trick. 1080p with Very High quality went down easily, as did 1440p, but 4k at 60+ fps was still just a bit out of reach. That leaves the obvious choice of the GTX 1080 Ti, which I paired with an i7-8700K. GTX 1070 Ti as a point of reference only manages 42 fps in limited testing, so that's not going to suffice. I did limited testing, mostly because I was only concerned with conquering Crysis, not providing a modern look at the past decade of graphics and processor hardware. Multiple GPUs in SLI or CrossFire could do so, but I wanted to stick with a single graphics card. What does it take to run Crysis at maximum quality, at 4k resolutions? First, one small caveat: I couldn't max out antialiasing with 8xAA, which even now proved to be too much for any single GPU. Our modern 4k resolution (3840x2160) is just over twice as many pixels, but with orders of magnitude more computational power, we should be able to take down Crysis with ease, right? Maybe… Maxing out Crysis at 4k with 4xAA Now to be fair, the best monitors in 2007 consisted of 30-inch panels running at 2560x1600, but most places didn't even both testing Crysis at that resolution because it just wasn't feasible. Many benchmarks ended up turning down the shader quality a notch to provide a reasonable balance between performance and quality-and really, Crysis with everything set to medium quality (plus high shaders if you want AA) still looks pretty amazing. It looked good, perhaps a bit too good, and the hardware of the day wasn't up to the task. Crysis includes volumetric lighting, lush vegetation, and it was the very first game to ever implement screen space ambient occlusion.īlazing new trails and being first doesn't always lead to a 'best' solution, and that was true of Crysis's SSAO. Shaders were also somehow involved with the game's antialiasing support (turning on AA forces Shader Quality to high, which itself causes a large impact to performance), but the complexity goes far beyond antialiasing. Using shaders in games is common these days, but in 2007 having that many was bleeding edge stuff. Roy Taylor (of Nvidia at the time) stated that Crysis uses over 85,000 shaders-small programs designed to generate graphical effects. Crysis was one of the very first PC games to support DirectX 10, and it used the budding API in ways that perhaps weren't quite expected.

Call on students to supply the answers and discuss any misunderstandings. Give students a few minutes to do the practice problems. Say to the class, “Now that you can order fractions, we are going to compare fractions using the symbols, or =.” Write and draw the following on the board:īe sure to point out that the fraction strips are equal in length.Īsk for a student volunteer to circle and on the fraction strips.Īsk, “Which fraction is greater?” Have another student place the appropriate symbol in the box.įor additional practice, write the following problems on the board (without the symbols filled in). Note: Be sure students understand the above pattern only applies when the numerators are all 1. When ordering unit fractions from least to greatest, the fraction with the largest denominator has the smallest value. Have students use the Parallel Number Line worksheet. Have students discuss how to order each group of fractions from least to greatest. Write the following groups of fractions on the board:

Snarks do make a return in some later games, and their high-definition details are just beautiful. Snarks were an entertaining little enemy that doubled as a weapon almost resembling a tapered flea with a single green eye and four crab-like legs, it poured from its organic looking nests to not only bite at intruders, but eventually explode, which is in fact a defensive strategy seen in a few real-world social insects! The player could also pick up a Snark nest and use snarks like living, guided grenades, a fun enough concept that I'm surprised they didn't take off more as a "mascot" creature to the series. These Houndeyes would have been much more aggressive, and their models were more emaciated, as though the population trapped on Earth was becoming malnourished. The Houndeye was set to return in Half Life 2, with a new model so detailed that we could have seen individual fly-like hairs between its many lenses, but it was sadly dropped during development. This is not only adorable, but it was one of the earliest, rare instances of a video game enemy programmed with behaviors not immediately relevant to killing or obstructing the player. What's also interesting about the Houndeye is that it has programmed curiosity! Idle Houndeyes in-game will closely inspect noisy machinery and flashing lights, even gently pawing at them. I still think that would have been more interesting, and that they could have still used it to "see" by emitting sonar. When I first saw these creatures, read their name, and heard how they attack, I assumed the "eye" wasn't really an eye at all, but strictly a sound-producing organ, a sort of biological speaker system. The Houndeye changed little from its original conceptual art, but it sure was an eerie drawing it's always made me think of a decapitated pig or cow, the kind of unsettling nightmare entity you would expect from the first three Silent Hill games, although the original Silent Hill would only come out the following year. It's timid on its own, but it's bolder and deadlier in packs, which is of course the origin of the common everyday phrase "hound eye coordination." Its mouth is located on its underbelly, and it attacks with a grating sonic screech canonically intense enough to cause internal bleeding. "Sonicanis myriops" was the first creature I ever saw from this franchise, so it's the first one I actually associate with the game and the first I'm going to review! A simple but effective design, the Houndeye is a fat, yellow-skinned creature with three roughly dog-like legs, and instead of a head, the front of its torso opens up into a dark, insectlike multifaceted eye. Today, we'll go over the original selection of these alien things along with a few of their facelifts in the years since, and a handful of my favorites from the rest of the franchise. You likely don't need a refresher on Half-Life's general premise: a secret research facility accidentally opens a dimensional rift to an alien world, and alien things come out of it. So many games have built upon this model in the decades since, it's easy to forget that it was ever something radically new. Instead, they found a relatively seamless virtual world in which NPC characters are fighting for their own survival independently of the player, creatures exhibit more than "kill on sight" behavior and there's never just one way to get around the next threat. Gamers who went in blind to Half-Life may have expected to simply shoot little monsters until the monsters are all gone, shoot the big monster until the big monster dies, teleport to the next level and repeat. In 1998, We were all still used to video games with rigidly distinct levels, linear progression, tightly scripted events, and AI that rarely surpassed that of the average Koopa Paratroopa. The author of this piece, and many like it at the time, was awestruck by how the game played out "like a movie," and perhaps rightly so. I first heard of Half-Life from an article in "PC Gaming's" January 1998 issue, which for some reason I owned before I owned a computer that could play games. It also still feels to me like a relatively "new" or "modern" game, somehow, even though for many of you, it's a relic of an ancient time before you were ever born. So I've never actually played Half-Life, but through over two decades of cultural osmosis, it sure feels like I have. Finally Reviewing Classic Half Life Creatures Though Frodo’s will and perseverance alone is heroic in its own right, it’s undeniable that, without the care, guidance, protection, and encouragement of his dear friend Sam, the journey would’ve been a failure. And when the odds are stacked against them, when Frodo wants to give up and give in to the corrupting power of the One Ring, it’s Sam who keeps the journey on track and drives them toward Mount Doom. He is good, humble, unselfish, and tenderhearted. But Sam represents a kind of heroism that we’re all capable of. So, what is it about Samwise Gamgee that makes him such a standout in a cast of characters marked by their gallantry? After all, Sam is not of royal lineage nor is he particularly gifted with a broadsword, axe, or mystical abilities. Beyond the Fellowship, there are heroes still: King Theoden, Eowyn, Faramir, Elrond, and Galadriel, to name just a few. And, of course, there's the unlikely quest hero, Frodo Baggins, and his three fellow Hobbits, Merry, Pippin, and Samwise, all setting out on a journey far beyond the reaches of their wildest imaginations-or their grimmest nightmares. The list includes the bold yet diplomatic Aragorn, a born leader and the rightful King of Gondor the skilled warrior Boromir, fully dedicated to his people the wizard Gandalf, whose powers and wisdom were largely unmatched the earnest and battle-ready dwarf Gimli and Legolas, an Elven prince turned compatriot. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings has no shortage of heroic figures. Such steadfast gentleness and compassion demonstrates a dauntlessness all its own: the audacity to believe in, and hope for, a better world. But even still, there is one act of valor that remains largely unsung: remaining relentlessly kind and caring in a culture that routinely champions the loudest and most forceful. And in my own life, I've seen time and again that courage does not have to be loud or overstated-in fact, the bravest folks often ward off unthinkable evils and triumph over tremendous obstacles in complete silence. Communities have survived tumult through the support and guidance of nonprofits and sociopolitical movements, the very embodiment of the notion that leadership is not always synonymous with power or control. We've lived through enough moments of great upheaval to recognize that heroics have little to do with who’s charging headfirst into battle or basking in the glow of glory. In reality, our cultural understanding of heroics has grown past that of myths and legends. And it's been hard to parse that sense of self when it feels it can never amount to that Herculean expectation of striving, succeeding, and winning-doing it all with an ironclad conviction. I am-and always have been-sensitive, gentle in temperament, and prone to setting aside ambition to weigh doing well with doing good. If you were to conjure up a mental image of a heroic figure, whatever surefooted warrior you concocted would likely bear little to no resemblance (physical or otherwise) to someone like me. |
